Izmir mayor joins ruling party

The mayor of Izmir, Cemil Tugay, has officially joined the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), despite being elected in 2024 as a candidate from the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). This marks the first time in Izmir's history that the city will be led by an AKP mayor.

Ceremony marks party affiliation

Tugay joined the AKP on October 7 during a ceremony where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pinned the party's insignia on his jacket. The event symbolized his formal transition to the ruling party, despite his previous political alignment.

Municipal council remains opposition-led

Despite Tugay's change in allegiance, the municipal council of Izmir remains dominated by the opposition. This means that while the mayor is now an AKP member, the city's governing body is still largely controlled by the Republican People's Party (CHP).

Protests erupt in Izmir

Following the announcement of Tugay's party switch, demonstrations took place in Izmir. Protesters carried a coffin bearing his name, symbolizing their view of him as a traitor. The public reaction highlighted deep divisions over his political shift.

Cultural figures resign in protest

A dozen cultural figures from Izmir also resigned in protest against Tugay's decision to join the AKP. Their resignations reflected broader discontent among the city's intellectual and artistic community with the mayor's move.

Opposition accuses of pressure and coercion

Opposition figures have criticized Tugay's switch, suggesting it was the result of pressure. Özgür Özel, a prominent opposition leader, claimed that Tugay had been threatened, blackmailed, and that his name had been included in the file of a detainee to exert influence.
