Police are investigating the death of Olivia Oras, a 27-year-old social media influencer, following complications from a cosmetic procedure. Oras had traveled to a private clinic in Helsinki, Finland, for a scheduled liposuction procedure. During the operation, she lost consciousness after receiving anesthesia. She was then transported to Helsinki University Hospital, where she passed away several days later on September 3. Her family has reported the incident to the police, and authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway. At this time, the Helsinki Police have not released further details, but they mentioned that they are looking into the possibility of aggravated manslaughter, which is a legal term for causing someone’s death through reckless or unlawful behavior, and could result in a prison sentence of up to six years. The clinic where Oras received treatment, the Plastic Surgery Center in Helsinki, has been shut down by police after an investigation revealed that clients were placed in serious danger by the clinic’s staff. All of the clinic’s locations were suspended immediately following the discovery. Oras had gained notoriety at the age of 14 when she began sharing aspects of her life online. In 2016, at 16, she was featured in a documentary titled The Perfect Selfie, which followed her life for 18 months as a portrayal of a "modern coming-of-age story in the social media era." After the documentary was released, Oras experienced anxiety and moved to Amsterdam, closing her social media accounts. She worked at a café and had plans to attend university before witnessing a friend in her apartment building die by suicide, an event that deeply affected her. In a 2024 interview, Oras reflected on the impact of that experience, saying, "I was just building the life of my dreams, but now I saw what happened in my eyes over and over again." She returned to Helsinki to be with her parents but struggled with alcoholism and a dependency on sleeping pills, which she discussed publicly. In 2022, she entered a rehabilitation facility for a month to address these issues. In her final years, Oras dedicated herself to founding an organization focused on supporting research for pulmonary diseases, inspired by her father’s diagnosis with pulmonary fibrosis. She also took on a leadership role at an AI start-up and worked in marketing for a wellness technology company.
