Alexis Bernadet extends contract with Montpellier

Alexis Bernadet, a 25-year-old French rugby player, has agreed to a three-year contract extension with Montpellier, securing his future with the team from the Hérault region. The deal was finalized on October 21, according to reports from Midi Olympique.

Bernadet's performance boosts his standing

Bernadet has played six matches and started four times in the first six rounds of the 2026-2027 season. His performances have elevated him above Scottish international Ali Price in the club’s hierarchy.

Montpellier faced challenges in negotiations

Negotiating Bernadet’s extension was not straightforward. Montpellier had received two rejections before presenting a third offer, which was eventually accepted. During the process, Vannes, Perpignan, and the Stade Français had shown interest in the player.

Stade Français made a stronger initial offer

The Stade Français had initially submitted a financial offer higher than Montpellier’s, aiming to prepare for the succession of Tawera Kerr-Barlow. However, Bernard Laporte, president of Montpellier Rugby (MHR), successfully convinced Bernadet to stay with the club.

Bernadet's career path and role at Montpellier

Bernadet began his career with the youth teams of the Stade Français before emerging at Montauban and joining Montpellier in 2024. He has since developed within the club and now holds a key position in Montpellier’s plans. His extension allows the team to retain a rising player who can also play on the wing.

Stade Français seeks new options

With Bernadet’s decision to stay, the Stade Français must now look for alternative solutions to prepare for the succession of Kerr-Barlow.
