Mayotte's City of Mamoudzou hosted resilience events on October 13, 2026, to prepare residents for natural disasters, focusing on flood risks from the Majimbini River.
Mamoudzou hosts resilience events
On October 13, 2026, the City of Mamoudzou in Mayotte organized events as part of the National Resilience Day, aimed at developing a shared culture of risk and preparing the population for natural or technological disasters.Focus on flood risk
The commune of Mamoudzou is exposed to several major natural risks, particularly the flood risk related to the Majimbini River watershed. Heavy rainfall episodes, combined with rapid urbanization and soil impermeabilization, accentuate runoff and flood phenomena, with direct consequences for the population and riverine infrastructure.Event structure and activities
The program was structured in two parts. From 2 PM to 5 PM, the resilience village at the fish hall brought together four stands: the French Red Cross (PIROI), the City of Mamoudzou (Municipal Safety Plan), CADEMA (Majimbini River Flood Prevention Program), and DEALM (Risk Prevention Plan). From 3 PM to 5:30 PM, the sensitization hike started from the village and led participants to the heights of the Majimbini River, with participants advised to wear appropriate clothing and bring water and food if needed.Alignment with national goals
This action aligned with the three objectives of the National Resilience Day: developing the risk culture, preparing the population for the occurrence of a disaster, and strengthening the collective resilience of the territory. It also contributed to the priorities of the Flood Prevention Action Program (PAPI) led by CADEMA and prepared the update of the Communal Information Document on Major Risks (DICRIM) led by the City.Parallel initiatives by local associations
In parallel with the resilience village and the sensitization hike organized by the City, the Mayotte Inter-Association Network (RIAM) brought together several associations in its premises in Doujani to sensitize people to the risk culture and preparation for natural disasters. Participating organizations included the French Red Cross (PIROI), Yes We Can Nette, Autisme Mayotte, Solidarités International, Actes & Cités, Air Architecture, Compagnons Bâtisseurs de Mayotte, SHAMA, UDM, and the City of Mamoudzou.
