Majimbini River's flood risk

The Majimbini River flows from the highlands of M'tsapéré into a lagoon, covering about 11 kilometers. Its path passes through urban areas that are at high risk of flooding, especially in the downstream section where river floods often overlap with marine flooding during high tides.

Focus on historical weather events

To better understand and manage flood risks, the community is examining historical cyclonic events that have impacted the island, including Kamisy, Gafilo, Hellen, and more recently, Chido. These events provide valuable data on past flooding patterns and their intensity.

Call for public contributions

The Cadema is asking residents and those familiar with the area to share photographs, videos, or personal memories related to past flooding events. This community input is crucial for reconstructing a detailed history of the river’s behavior during significant weather events.

Field surveys and data collection

In addition to public contributions, field surveys will be conducted to gather more precise data. This combined approach will help establish reference water levels and determine where to install visible markers along the river.

Installation of visible markers

With the consent of nearby property owners, small sign plates will be placed along the river to mark historical water levels. These markers will be part of the National Flood Benchmark Database and the Community Information Document on Major Risks in Mamoudzou.

Educational and safety purpose

These markers aim to make flood risks more visible in daily life, helping residents stay vigilant and maintain safety awareness. They also serve as an educational tool to reinforce community preparedness for future flooding events.

Public meeting to discuss the project

The Cadema is hosting a public meeting on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 10 o'clock in the central public square of M'tsapéré, near the dispensary. Residents are invited to learn more about the project and share their documents or stories about the river’s history.
