At the end of August 2026, two alternative platforms known as Nitter and XCancel temporarily suspended their services. These platforms allow users to view and share content from the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) without needing to use the official app. After a brief hiatus, both services have now resumed operations. Nitter, one of the platforms, posted an update on its website explaining that it had received a cease and desist letter from X on August 24, 2026. This type of legal notice is typically used to demand that a party stop a particular activity, often related to intellectual property or trademark infringement. After consulting with their legal team and taking time to consider the implications, the Nitter project leaders decided to continue their service. In their message, they stated, "Following the legal advice received, the Nitter project will continue," and indicated that the platform would be "operational again soon." XCancel, the other platform, has also resumed its operations. It is particularly useful for users who want to view content from public figures who do not share their posts on other platforms. For instance, the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, does not post on other social media platforms, making XCancel a valuable tool for accessing his messages. In response to the resumption of these services, Next, another platform, created a personal tutorial to help users, including Macron, cross-post their content across different platforms such as X, Bluesky, and Mastodon. This tutorial aims to provide guidance on how to share content across various social media services, ensuring that users can maintain their online presence even if they choose not to use X directly.
