Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has lost her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who passed away while receiving medical treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the death, stating that Ameir had been suffering from a heart condition. He died at 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Monday. Funeral arrangements are currently being made in Kizimkazi, a village on Zanzibar, which is a semi-autonomous island of Tanzania. Hafidh Ameir Hassan was an academic specializing in agriculture and maintained a relatively low public profile. He became Tanzania's first First Gentleman when President Samia took office in 2021. He married Samia in 1978, before she entered national politics. The couple had four children—three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also a politician and currently serves in Zanzibar's House of Representatives in the National Assembly. As First Gentleman, Ameir rarely appeared in public with the president. He was only occasionally seen alongside her at official events, preferring a more private role. His death has drawn condolences from regional leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, who expressed deep sorrow and noted that President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children have lost a beloved father, and Tanzania has lost a distinguished citizen.
