The Royal Mint has released two special 50p coins to celebrate 60 years of the popular science fiction television series Star Trek. These coins feature bright colors, inspired by the vivid costumes from the show and the development of color television in the 1960s. The first coin includes the Vulcan salute, a hand gesture used in the series to express peace and friendship, along with the words "Live long and prosper," a famous phrase from the show, and "Star Trek 60." The second coin highlights four spacecraft from different points in the Star Trek timeline, along with the same anniversary message. Tim Mulhall, who leads fan-related projects at The Royal Mint, said, "It’s a privilege for The Royal Mint to boldly go, celebrating 60 years of Star Trek with a keepsake that’s out of this world. Both collectable 50p coins are designed for fans who’ve grown up with the franchise and want a piece of that history to treasure." Ruth Henriquez, vice president of products and experiences at Paramount EMEA, added, "Star Trek has one of the most dedicated collector communities in the world, and these coins are a tribute to 60 years of the franchise." The coins will be available for purchase starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, with prices beginning at £19.95. Fans can buy both coins together from September 3, while the Vulcan salute coin will be available individually from September 3 and the spacecraft coin will be available individually from November. This release follows the Mint’s recent commemorative coins, including a Game of Thrones collection released in July to mark 15 years of the fantasy drama. That collection was made in partnership with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products and focused on the theme of "ice and fire." A month earlier, the Mint also released a 50p coin to celebrate 100 years of the Grand Prix in Britain, unveiled at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey, alongside a Delage car.
