DOK Leipzig has released the full schedule for its 69th edition, which will run from 26 to 30 October. As one of Europe's leading documentary film festivals, DOK Leipzig brings together filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences to explore pressing topics in documentary filmmaking. This year's DOK Industry programme includes a wide range of events, from talks and workshops to marketplaces for film projects, all aimed at fostering creative collaboration and addressing challenges in the industry. A key highlight is the DOK Industry Talk titled Doc Together: When Freedom of Expression Is at Risk, a joint effort with the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. This panel will discuss the growing threats to press freedom across Europe and examine how documentary filmmakers, journalists, and institutions can collectively respond to these challenges.
The festival will also focus on inclusivity, with a session titled Making Space for Queer Cinema - The Curator's Role, which will highlight the need to challenge stereotypes and promote diverse, intersectional storytelling in film. In partnership with the Romani Filmmakers Network and the Critical Film & Image Hub, a workshop titled Building a Framework for Respectful Romani Representation will explore the history of antigypsyism in cinema and offer strategies for more respectful portrayals of Romani people in film. The session will include an interactive feedback session for participants.
International projects will be a major part of the festival, with Generation Africa 2.0 Rough Cut Boutique showcasing five works in progress from Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Benin. The DOK Co-Pro Market will feature 35 documentary, animated documentary, and fiction animation projects in development. The festival is also expanding its focus on animation, with the Animation Lab DOK Leipzig entering its fourth edition in collaboration with CEE Animation. Over three days, participants will learn from producer Jean-François Le Corre and multidisciplinary artist Uri Kranot, gaining insights into navigating the global animation industry.
A special session, the Adult Animation Roundtable, will bring together creators and industry leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in adult animation. A panel titled From Niche into the Spotlight - Pathways for Greater Visibility for European Animation will explore ways to increase the visibility of animated features and shorts, including strategies for festivals, cinemas, and media outlets. The Animated Film Hommage and Masterclass will honor Trollfilm, a Norwegian animation studio known for its innovative cut-out and multiplane techniques. The DOK Archive Market will also host a panel on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in working with archival footage, while the festival’s Short n' Sweet event will showcase a new wave of short film projects.
