Guest calls feature introduced

WhatsApp has launched a new feature called guest calls, which allows users to invite people who don’t have a WhatsApp account to join a call. These calls can be accessed through a link and joined via a web browser on a computer, after the host verifies the guest’s entry.

How guest calls work

The guest call feature supports both one-on-one and group calls with up to 32 participants. The host has full control over who enters the call, with guests waiting in a virtual waiting room until they are admitted by the host. Once inside, guests can use basic features like sharing their computer screen, sending emoji reactions, and raising their hand to request to speak.

Limitations for guests

Guests on a WhatsApp call cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages, or directly add others to the call. This ensures that the feature remains focused on the invited individuals and maintains the privacy of WhatsApp users.

Integration with calendar apps

WhatsApp plans to integrate guest calls with Google Calendar and Outlook by the end of the year. This integration aims to help users schedule professional meetings more easily. Once a plugin is installed and an account is connected, users can add a WhatsApp call link to their calendar invitations.

How to create a guest call link

To create a guest call link, users must open the WhatsApp Calls tab, press the + icon, and generate a call link. This link can then be shared with intended invitees. Guests can join the call by opening the link in a web browser, entering their name, and waiting for the host to admit them.

Rollout and availability

The guest calls feature is being rolled out gradually on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS. It may not yet be available on all accounts, and no specific general availability date has been announced. This update is part of a broader set of call-related improvements, including the addition of audio and video calls on the web version of WhatsApp earlier this year.
