Exhibition showcases historical banquets
An exhibition at Chambord Castle, titled Les Festins de Chambord, allows visitors to experience four major banquets from different historical periods, from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The exhibition aims to explore the history of the castle through the lens of gastronomy, using over 900 objects, videos, scents, and music to recreate the atmosphere of these events.Banquet highlights royal rivalry
The first banquet, set in 1539, reenacts a meeting between François I, king of France, and Charles V, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Co-curator Loïc Bienassis explained that the display aimed to highlight the guest’s wealth and power, with dishes like fresh melon and whole cooked fish arranged to emphasize the "spectacular aspect of the French service."17th-century banquet reveals staging
A reconstructed 17th-century banquet is based on a rare table plan, offering insight into how meals were used for "staging." The arrangement of dishes, including fresh melon and whole cooked fish, again emphasizes the dramatic and visual elements of the French dining experience.18th-century table reflects global influence
The 18th-century banquet table showcases the growing European influence around the world. Porcelain cups of coffee and hot chocolate are displayed as symbols of the exchange of goods and skills through exploration and trade during this period.Modern banquet includes Lady Diana's dress
The final banquet, set in 1988, features Prince Charles and Lady Diana. The exhibition includes "all the objects" from that evening, such as tableware, carpets, and Lady Diana’s dress worn on November 9. The goal is to let visitors almost imagine sitting at the royal couple’s table.Exhibition emphasizes elite opulence
The exhibition aims to demonstrate the "opulence of the elites," with even fake objects recreated in resin for an immersive experience. Les Festins de Chambord is open from September 26, 2026, to January 24, 2027, at the Domaine national de Chambord.
