On Friday, October 2, student demonstrations in the Oise department of northern France turned violent, resulting in injuries to three gendarmes, a teacher, and three young people. In the town of Compiègne, a high school student was struck in the head by a projectile from a tear gas grenade launcher. The demonstrations, which are part of an ongoing mobilization by Isarien high school students, reached a peak with up to 1,760 participants according to local authorities. Incidents included eight instances of trash fires, fireworks, and projectile throws, as well as damage to urban furniture, vehicles, and a commercial display window. According to the Oise prefecture, the damage extended to a bus in Chantilly and the windows of the Mireille-Grenet high school in Compiègne. The projectiles used were approximately 6 cm in diameter, matching the size of tear gas cartridges. Franck Obajtek, a union delegate from the CGT Saint-Gobain, was present at the demonstration and described finding a young girl on the ground after she was struck. "We tried to protect her as much as possible from the tear gas, because it was still firing," he said. The girl was bleeding heavily and was eventually taken to the emergency room at the Compiègne hospital. Nayé Sidibé, a first-aid trained official from the UD CGT Oise, assisted the injured student. She described the girl as being stunned and in pain, with a wound matching the size of a tear gas cartridge. The student was treated and returned home later in the afternoon. Sidibé and Obajtek were at the demonstration at the request of their union, which had coordinated with high school student organizations to provide support and security. They criticized the approach taken by law enforcement, stating that students were cornered and exposed to tear gas from both sides, leaving them with few safe escape routes. The demonstrations have led to 60 arrests and 54 people placed in custody. The unionists highlighted the risks faced by students, emphasizing the dangerous conditions created by the police strategy. The events in Oise continue to draw attention to the tensions between student protesters and law enforcement during the ongoing mobilizations.
