A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized on Monday after being struck in the face by a projectile fired by a police officer during a school blockade near the Château d'Epluches vocational high school in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, Val-d'Oise. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m., according to the Pontoise prosecutor's office, during a blockage organized on Monday, September 28, as part of a nationwide movement involving 180 other schools across France. The student was taken to the Pontoise hospital with broken teeth and a shattered mouth, according to the prosecutor and the student's mother, who described the injury as "destroyed." The confrontation was filmed and shared on social media. One video showed a teenager facing several police officers in front of the school. One officer was holding a baton, and a few seconds later, another officer used a grenade launcher known as "Cougar," which fired a projectile that struck the student in the face. According to prosecutors, the student approached a police officer, who then pushed him back. The student fell to the ground, and a second police officer present used his launcher and shot the student. Teachers present at the scene said they were "deeply shocked by the situation" and described the police reaction as disproportionate. They stated that the situation escalated when a bottle was thrown on the roof of a police vehicle, leading to the use of tear gas. The teachers reported that the student was attacked by several officers, who hit him repeatedly, and finally struck in the face by a projectile fired at point-blank by one of the officers in front of the students and teachers present. Two investigations have been opened: one by the IGPN, the police's internal affairs, concerning the shot fired by the police officer, and another regarding the alleged violence committed by the minor on an officer. The student's family announced they wanted to file a complaint. Deputy Paul Vannier (La France insoumise) submitted a letter to the prosecutor of the Republic, stating that the baton strikes and grenade shots were delivered deliberately. The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, reacted on Monday afternoon, stating he did not believe the police's actions were disproportionate. Teachers, unions, and politicians have reacted to the incident, with the teachers of Château d'Epluches denouncing "police violence." Left-wing politicians and unions have called for an end to the deployment of police in front of student blockades, emphasizing that the Ministry of National Education should manage student mobilizations rather than the Minister of the Interior.
