BYD's new Seagull EV, priced at 8,800 euros in China, could challenge European electric city cars with rapid charging and competitive pricing.
BYD unveils new electric vehicle
BYD has launched the Seagull, an electric city car priced starting at 8,800 euros in China. The vehicle is designed for urban use and is notable for its fast charging capabilities, which can restore most of its range in just ten minutes depending on the battery version selected.Vehicle specifications and performance
The Seagull measures approximately 4.20 meters in length and offers two battery options: 30.1 kWh and 39.2 kWh, providing ranges of 320 and 420 kilometers, respectively, based on the Chinese CLTC cycle. It also offers different power outputs, ranging from 116 to 129 horsepower, all with rear-wheel drive.Fast charging technology
The Seagull uses BYD’s second-generation Blade battery and Flash Charging technology for the 39.2 kWh version. This allows the battery to charge from 10 to 70% in five minutes and from 10 to 97% in nine minutes, significantly reducing charging times for users.Potential European market entry
While the Seagull is initially aimed at the Chinese market, it could also compete with European electric city cars if it maintains its price advantage when sold in Europe. However, factors like taxes, import costs, and other market specifics are expected to raise the final price in Europe.Estimated European pricing and competition
According to the specialized magazine Automobile Propre, the Seagull could cost between 20,000 and 25,000 euros in Europe, where it might be marketed as the Dolphin Surf. At this price, it could challenge models like the Renault 5 E-Tech and the Volkswagen ID. Polo, but may lose some of its initial appeal due to the higher cost in Europe.
