Pierre Mignoni, a French rugby coach who recently left RC Toulon, is reportedly being considered for the position of head coach of the Fiji national team ahead of the 2027 World Cup. According to Rugbyrama, Mignoni has been in contact with the Fijian rugby federation in recent days, and a video conference is already scheduled. While no official decision has been made, the timing suggests that the possibility is becoming more concrete. The position has been vacant for several weeks, and the Fijian federation has received 31 applications. As reported by FijiVillage, the federation is currently conducting final interviews, and the new coach is expected to be announced early next week. The new coach will need to prepare for a demanding autumn schedule, which includes matches against Japan on October 24 and subsequent games against France, Ireland, and Italy in November. Mignoni's background appears to match Fiji's needs. He has experience with the Top 14, the top-tier French rugby league, and is familiar with many Fijian players who play in France. Nearly 90% of the players eligible for selection are based in France, which is crucial for a team where many key players live far from the capital, Suva. Mignoni has previously worked with Josua Tuisova in Toulon and Lyon, and recently coached Jiuta Wainiqolo and Setariki Tuicuvu in the French club scene, indicating he has close relationships with several Fijian internationals. However, coaching the national team would present different challenges compared to his club experience. There would be fewer training sessions and less time to build consistent play, requiring a different approach for a coach who is typically focused on offensive details and team coordination. Each training session would be more like a short sprint rather than the long, drawn-out sessions typical of club rugby. The recruitment process is already well underway, with the contract for the future national coach expected to run until December 31, 2027. Mignoni’s sudden emergence in the discussions could shift the dynamics, although he is not yet the federation’s final choice. Mignoni had previously declined in 2020 to join Fabien Galthié’s coaching staff with the French national team, but six years later, the international opportunity may be reappearing through the Pacific region, with the 2027 World Cup on the horizon.
