Ukrainian drone rescues wounded soldier

The Ukrainian military shared footage on Monday, October 19, showing what they called the first instance of a drone transporting a wounded soldier from a battlefield. The video, posted on the Associated Press YouTube channel, shows a man being carried by a large drone over an unclear area at what appears to be a low altitude.

Drones used in unprecedented way

According to NBC News, the drone gently placed the soldier on the ground, and the pilot greeted him with "Welcome to earth!" The rescued soldier had been on the front line for nearly 500 days, facing constant danger, and was seriously injured, making traditional evacuation methods too risky.

Evacuation by drone deemed necessary

The Kyiv Independent reported that the area was mined, and using land-based methods or ground robots to rescue the soldier would have put the rescue team in danger. The Ukrainian military opted to use a heavy hexacopter transport drone called the "Heavy Shot Ayudag-6" to extract the wounded soldier safely.

Rescue operation described as historic

The operation, which lasted one hour and fifteen minutes, was called "historical" by several media outlets. The soldier was guided by his comrades to attach himself to the drone, which then transported him 62 kilometers to a hospital. The manufacturer of the drone, Gurzuf Defense, stated the equipment had been sent to the soldier in advance, including carabiners for attachment.

Drones reshape modern warfare

NBC News noted that this operation marks a new phase in the conflict, where both Ukrainian and Russian forces are increasingly using drones to minimize casualties. Ukrainian forces have announced plans to use such drone rescues regularly in the future, highlighting the growing role of drones in modern warfare.
