New ultra-wide lens released

Tamron has announced the release of the Tamron 12-20mm F2.8, an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens aimed at professional photographers and videographers. The lens is available for Sony E and Nikon Z camera systems and includes features designed to improve both optical performance and user experience.

Lens specifications and optical design

The Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 offers a focal range from 12 to 20 mm with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8. It uses a 12-blade circular diaphragm, which helps create smooth bokeh effects and allows for better performance in low-light conditions. The lens also includes specialized optical elements like XGM, GM, XLD, and LD lenses, as well as advanced anti-reflection coatings to reduce flare and ghosting.

Autofocus and control features

The lens is equipped with a VXD linear autofocus motor, which is described as fast, precise, and quiet. It includes a manual diaphragm adjustment ring with a notched version for Sony E mounts and a programmable control ring for Nikon Z mounts. Additional controls include two programmable Focus Set buttons and switches for autofocus activation, manual focus locking, and zoom range locking.

Focusing capabilities and physical design

The Tamron 12-20mm F2.28 has a minimum focusing distance of 180 mm at 12 mm and 280 mm at 20 mm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.17x and 0.11x respectively. The lens is dust and water resistant and includes a USB-C port for wireless communication via a Bluetooth dongle. It weighs 570 g for the Sony E version and 585 g for the Nikon Z version.

Optical performance and limitations

The lens performs well in the center and two-thirds of the image, particularly at f/2.8 and across all focal lengths. However, edge sharpness is less consistent, especially at 12 mm with the largest apertures. Distortion is relatively low, with measurements around 0.58% at 12 mm. Chromatic aberrations are minimal, measured around 0.03%.

Pricing and competition

The Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 is priced at 1700 € for the Sony E mount and 1800 € for the Nikon Z mount. It competes with lenses from Sony, Nikon, and Sigma, which range in price from 1500 € to 3100 €.
