Nikon unveils new telephoto zoom lens

Nikon officially announced the Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S on Thursday, October 29, a telephoto zoom lens designed for its full-frame mirrorless cameras. The company had previously announced the lens on May 7, giving photographers a preview of its features and capabilities.

Lens covers extended focal range

The lens provides a focal range of 120 to 300 mm, ideal for wildlife and sports photography. It includes an integrated 1.4x teleconverter labeled "TC," which extends the range to 168-420 mm without requiring additional accessories or changing the lens.

Weight reduction compared to previous model

The Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S weighs 2,735 grams, which is 515 grams lighter than the previous Nikon 120-300 mm lens for DSLR cameras. The earlier model did not include an integrated teleconverter, contributing to its greater weight.

Teleconverter affects aperture and light

The integrated teleconverter reduces the maximum aperture from f/2.8 to f/4, cutting the amount of light reaching the camera sensor in half. This may require photographers to adjust their shutter speed or increase sensor sensitivity in low-light conditions.

Image quality claims and optical design

Nikon claims the lens maintains image quality comparable to a fixed focal length lens, even with the teleconverter activated. This is attributed to advanced optical elements such as Super ED and SR glass, as well as specialized coatings that reduce chromatic aberrations and unwanted reflections.

Autofocus and stabilization features

The autofocus system uses multiple groups of movable lenses, driven by Silky Swift VCM motors for fast and precise focusing. Nikon also claims the lens offers up to 6.5 stops of image stabilization, helping to reduce camera shake in challenging conditions.

Lens design and environmental protection

The lens maintains a consistent length across all focal lengths due to internal zoom mechanisms. It is also sealed against dust and moisture, making it suitable for use in various weather conditions.

Nikon’s innovation in lens design

Nikon states that the Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is the first zoom lens in the world to combine a constant f/2.8 aperture with an integrated teleconverter. The company had previously used this design on its fixed focal length Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S lens.

Target audience and travel convenience

Nikon initially targets professional sports photographers, with plans to expand to wildlife photographers. The lens is designed to fit in a carry-on bag that meets international airline standards, which is crucial for photographers traveling between events.

Release date and price in France

The Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S will be available in France starting November 12, 2026, with a suggested retail price of 15,749 euros.
