An immersive virtual reality (VR) experience called Playing With Fire offers a unique way to experience the music of pianist Yuja Wang. This project, a collaboration between Wang, director Pierre-Alain Giraud, and artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, was produced by Vive Arts and Atlas V. It has been showcased in major cities like Cannes, Paris, and Shanghai, and is now on display in London through the new year. The experience invites audiences to wear VR headsets and enter nine distinct dreamlike worlds, each accompanied by a musical piece.
At the heart of the installation is a Steinway Spirio player piano, programmed by Wang herself. As the piano plays, a digital version of Wang appears in the virtual environment, creating the illusion that she is performing in two places—or even two universes—at the same time. The music featured in the experience spans a wide range of composers, including Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, Bach, Liszt, and Prokofiev. Each piece is paired with visual elements that bring the music to life—such as water pooling beneath the piano, imaginary sea creatures, and lava-like beings dancing around the audience.
One of the most intense moments in the experience is the frenzied finale of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7. The virtual world transforms into a scene of chaos, with villages burning on the horizon and drones skittering overhead. This dramatic sequence captures the emotional intensity of the music, immersing viewers in its power and urgency. As the experience progresses, it transitions into a more reflective mood with Chopin’s C sharp minor waltz.
In this final piece, the piano keys and hammers move on their own, creating a surreal and mesmerizing effect. This moment allows the audience to gradually return to the mechanics of reality, offering a contrast to the dreamlike and often chaotic visuals they have just experienced. Playing With Fire is not just a performance but a multi-sensory journey through music and imagination, inviting viewers to explore the intersection of sound and virtual reality.
