Doctolib, a popular French online platform for booking medical appointments, has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to assist doctors during consultations. The AI records conversations, transcribes them, and creates summaries. Stanislas Niox-Chateau, the CEO of Doctolib, believes AI will significantly transform healthcare worldwide, stating that it is central to improving both patient health and the daily work of medical professionals. During a visit to a health center in Quiberon, Brittany, the television program "Envoyé spécial" observed a demonstration of the AI tool. Dr. Jean-Philippe Moitier, a local physician, was shown how the AI could record and summarize a simulated consultation about a possible ankle sprain caused by a fall from a horse. The AI not only transcribed the conversation but also included medical terms that were not explicitly mentioned by the person pretending to be a patient. Despite the AI's capabilities, Dr. Moitier expressed some reservations. He said he "probably needs it less" and raised concerns about the handling of the data collected by the tool. The AI tool adds an extra 79 euros per month to a doctor's Doctolib subscription, which could boost the platform’s revenue without requiring new customers. Juliette Alibert, a lawyer specializing in health and digital law, pointed out ethical and legal concerns surrounding patient data and consent. She stressed the importance of ensuring that patients give their explicit permission for their health data to be used. Some doctors mentioned they found a pre-checked option allowing Doctolib to reuse their patients' health data, although they claimed they did not recall agreeing to it. Doctolib explained that the option is never checked by default and is only activated through a pop-up window requiring the doctor's explicit approval. Dr. Moitier has not yet subscribed to the AI tool, but one of his younger colleagues uses it regularly, without always informing patients at the beginning of their consultations. This highlights the ongoing debate about the role of AI in healthcare and the need for clear communication and informed consent from patients.
