Zusammen, meaning "together" in German, is a performance created by Émilie Capliez for the Grand Est-based company EquiNote. The show offers a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of circus artists, unfolding under a white and yellow tent at the edge of Toulouse, facing the La Grainerie complex, a hub dedicated to circus arts. The performance opens with scenes that mimic the aftermath of a show—untying flags, unplugging garlands, feeding animals, ordering hay, and preparing for the next city. These moments are interwoven with acrobatics, clowning, and unusual acts like rappelling from the top of the tent, making phone calls on a horse's back, and a pianist playing Chopin while a young man seeks inspiration on a pole. Émilie Capliez, who is also a codirector of the Comédie de Colmar, directed the performance. She focuses on the often-overlooked gestures and practices that occur backstage, highlighting both the imperfections and the dedication of circus performers. The second half of the show is described as more fragmented, featuring a plea for harmonious collaboration with animals and an antispécist message that is somewhat vague. This message is delivered through recorded interviews, though more context would have been helpful. Despite these elements, the performance is largely successful, with striking visuals like an acrobat suspended with a glowing helmet and a visibly delighted young girl laughing throughout the show. The production features a mix of human and animal performers, including acrobats Perrine Delsalle, Sarah Dreyer, Alfred Gilleron, David Koczij, Simon Martin-Kantorowicz, Vincent Welter, and horses named Apollon, Circo, Jasmin, Jet, Kamino, Popeye, and Quimper, along with dogs Coquine and Niro. The dramaturgy is by Juliette de Beauchamp, the set design by Alban Ho Van, the lighting by Bruno Marsol, the costumes by Marion Kuenemann and Julie Keyser, the music by David Koczij, and the choreography by Yan Raballand. Denis Lejeune serves as the assistant to the direction, and Vincent Welter is involved in artistic collaboration. Zusammen is produced by Sur un air de Terre — Cie EquiNote, with co-productions from Comédie de Colmar — CDN Grand Est Alsace, Le Plongeoir — Pôle national Cirque Le Mans, 13e sens Scène & Ciné – Obernai, Ville de Caen, Haras national d'Hennebont — Sellor, Communauté d'agglomération de Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, and L’Azimut — Pôle national du cirque. It received support from the Ministry of Culture, Artcena, and the Alsace European Collectivity, with artistic participation from the Jeune Théâtre National.
