Video game adaptation announced

Mouthwashing, an acclaimed indie horror game developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, is set to be adapted into a film. The official announcement was made on October 29 by Wrong Organ and Sony Pictures' production company Screen Gems.

Film details revealed

The film will be directed by Karyn Kusama, known for Jennifer's Body and Yellowjackets, and produced by Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone), C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng through their production company Crooked Highway. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (The Invitation) will write the screenplay.

Game plot and release

So far, specific details about the film's plot have not been confirmed, but the game follows five crew members aboard the Tulpar, a spaceship belonging to the Pony Express company. When the ship veers off course, the crew must deal with extreme conditions, battling hunger, isolation, paranoia, and hallucinations—and even defending themselves against their own crewmates. The game, originally released on PC in 2024, is now available on consoles since October 29.

Other game releases on Xbox

Another title from Critical Reflex, No, I'm Not a Human, as well as the acclaimed indie game Arctic Eggs, will also be available on Xbox, as revealed during the ID@XBOX presentation earlier this month. For now, it is unknown who will be cast in the film—but some of its characters are directly inspired by real actors, such as Shelley Duvall.

Trend of game adaptations

Mouthwashing is the latest video game to receive the green light for a film adaptation, following the announcement that PUBG will be adapted into a live-action series on Netflix, with the script written, directed, produced, and starring Donald Glover in the lead role. Increasingly, more video games are being adapted for the big screen; Michael B. Jordan is directing a film adaptation of Battlefield, and Street Fighter from Capcom was released in theaters earlier this month. This follows Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, which was a box office hit and part of a successful series of horror films this year.
