Mary Timby, a 39-year-old from Colorado, decided to visit Ireland on a whim after growing tired of using dating apps. Inspired by a comedy series that mentioned a matchmaking festival in Ireland, she discovered the real Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, which takes place throughout September. During her trip, she met her partner, Jason Mangan, an Irishman from County Clare, at a pub called The Matchmaker. The couple now lives together in a coastal cottage in County Clare. Timby initially filmed a short video on the plane before her flight, telling her approximately 300 TikTok followers about her spontaneous trip to the festival. Upon landing in Ireland, she found out her video had gone viral. She rented a manual transmission car and traveled to County Clare, where she stayed with an Irish family. She later visited Lisdoonvarna, where the festival has evolved from its origins 170 years ago as a place for bachelor farmers and visitors to socialize. During her first night in town, Timby was tired and jet-lagged, but her AirBnB host encouraged her to return the next night, when she met Mangan. Their conversation flowed, and Mangan, who was a designated driver that night, invited her out. They began a series of dates and eventually decided to maintain a long-distance relationship. Timby returned to Ireland at Christmas and met Mangan's family. They decided to share their relationship publicly on New Year's Eve, which generated significant attention. Timby has since partnered with a company called Met Through Friends to organize trips to the festival, expecting 80 to 100 responses but receiving 560. The first group of eight will travel later this month, with Mangan helping to plan the itinerary.
