Nothing's Ear (3a) design and features

Nothing’s Ear (3a) earbuds continue the brand’s design philosophy, using transparent housings, visible screws, and exposed circuitry. This aesthetic is applied to both the earbuds and their accompanying audio accessories, maintaining a cohesive look across the product line.

Ear (3a) performance and comfort

The Ear (3a) offers a lightweight, comfortable fit with silicone ear tips in four sizes, ensuring good acoustic sealing. While not the best for running, they are comfortable for extended use without significant pressure points. The charging case has rounded corners and a transparent cover, matching the earbuds’ color scheme.

Charging and connectivity options

Unlike some competitors, the Ear (3a) do not support Qi wireless charging or have a screen. Charging is done exclusively via USB-C, and the earbuds and case are IP54 certified, offering protection against rain and sweat but not water immersion. The case includes a magnetic cap for easy access to the earbuds.

Customization and app features

The Nothing X app provides extensive customization options, including an 8-band equalizer, Low Lag mode for gaming, and adaptive noise cancellation. A unique feature is the Snapshot function, which records voice memos directly in the earbuds. However, voice recording relies on a microphone in the case rather than the earbuds themselves.

Noise cancellation and sound quality

Nothing claims up to 45 dB of active noise cancellation, which works well on low frequencies but less effectively on higher ones. The bass-heavy sound signature is consistent with previous models, offering strong low-end performance but slightly reducing clarity in dense musical passages. The soundstage is more expansive than expected for this price.

Microphone performance and limitations

The earbuds use six MEMS microphones with AI processing to isolate voice. While effective in quiet environments, performance degrades in noisy or windy conditions. Voice quality from the earbuds is noticeably lower than recordings made directly on the smartphone, limiting their use for high-fidelity audio.

Battery life and charging

The Ear (3a) offer up to 10 hours of playback with ANC off and 6 hours with it on, totaling 42 hours with the case. Charging via USB-C is fast, with five minutes providing about an hour of playback. However, the lack of wireless charging is a notable omission compared to some competitors.

Market availability and competition

The Ear (3a) launched in July 2026 at 99 euros, the same price as the previous model, the Ear (a). They are available in four colors and compete with models from Xiaomi, Realme, and CMF by Nothing. The slightly more expensive Ear (3) adds wireless charging and improved features, but the Ear (3a) remains a strong option for its price.
