Call of Duty returns to Nintendo

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is now available on the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time the franchise has returned to a Nintendo console since Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013. The Switch 2 version includes the full campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ mode, but has been adapted to run on a portable device with some technical adjustments.

Gameplay and hardware considerations

The game is playable in both portable and docked modes, though the article strongly recommends using a controller for a better experience, as the included joysticks are too small. Unlike other platforms, it is not possible to connect a keyboard or mouse via USB, although the Joy-Con 2 can be used in mouse mode.

Performance details

In docked mode, the game runs at 1080p, while in portable mode it drops to 720p, with further reductions to 360p in demanding situations. The solo campaign is limited to 30 frames per second, while DMZ mode runs at 40 fps on compatible 120 Hz screens and 30 fps otherwise. Competitive multiplayer reaches 60 fps with occasional drops.

Features and cross-play support

The game includes an Achievements menu and supports cross-play and cross-progression, allowing players to sync progress across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC accounts. However, input lag remains a notable issue, even in docked mode with an Ethernet connection, making it less ideal for competitive play.

Technical enhancements and recommendations

The Switch 2 version includes NVIDIA DLSS, which can be activated in the options, though it is not enabled by default. Despite technical compromises, the Switch 2 version is considered a serious first port, offering a complete experience and gameplay comparable to other consoles. It is recommended for players without a PC or PS5/Xbox Series X|S, or as a complement during travel with cross-play and cross-progression support.
