DMZ mode released on 20 October

The DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 became available on 20 October on all consoles, including the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is scheduled for release on 23 October 2026 on the eShop and in physical format for 80 euros.

Extraction shooter gameplay

The DMZ mode is described as an extraction shooter, a sub-genre where players complete objectives while facing both AI and other players. In this mode, players assume the role of an operator, either alone or in teams of up to three, on a large map with various objectives, including searching for rare equipment, completing specific missions, killing bosses, or hunting opponents.

Time pressure and resource management

Time is limited in the DMZ mode, with a radioactive zone expanding across the map after approximately twenty minutes, blocking all exits. Players must balance completing objectives with the remaining time. The starting equipment is basic, and players need money to improve weapons, their base, and purchase rare items from a merchant.

Upgrading weapons and equipment

Weapons can be upgraded with levels, which allow the attachment of new gear such as stocks or scopes. However, most weapons are not available at the start and must be found on corpses, bought from the merchant, or discovered through blueprints, which are rare items found on the map or after certain missions.

Map design and challenges

The map includes various locations, such as a prison or a military camp, each with different difficulty levels. Higher difficulty locations feature more intense enemy waves. Players can encounter helicopters, military vehicles, snipers, and armored enemies. The mode includes bosses with unique patterns and story missions without competitive elements.

RPG progression and challenges

The RPG aspect allows players to improve their operator permanently, but losing equipment can be frustrating. Players must choose between being well-prepared or light and risky. The mode encourages cooperation and discretion, with some humorous and unexpected situations, such as lying on a sick man for cover.

Flaws and criticisms

Despite these qualities, the DMZ mode has flaws, including the potential for toxic players who camp at extraction points or hunt others. Teammates may be timid, reckless, or selfish. The mode also lacks innovation compared to existing titles.

Technical issues on Nintendo Switch 2

The porting of the mode to the Nintendo Switch 2 is criticized, with technical differences making it less enjoyable in crossplay. Nintendo Switch 2 players have limited visibility and a slower frame rate compared to PC and other console players, affecting gameplay. While crossplay can be disabled, it may lead to fewer players in online matches.

Portability and gameplay issues

The portable mode is described as nearly unplayable due to the large map and limited screen size. The combination of these factors raises concerns about the overall experience on the Nintendo Switch 2.
