Philips unveils the OLED951, a flagship OLED TV with 4K resolution, HDR support, and gaming-ready specs, though its OS faces criticism.
Philips launches new OLED951 television
Philips has introduced its latest high-end television model, the OLED951, which features a 65-inch screen with 4K resolution and OLED backlighting technology. This model is part of Philips' flagship OLED lineup, following the OLED950 and alongside the OLED911, which includes an integrated soundbar.Key features and technical specifications
The OLED951 includes support for multiple HDR formats, such as HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG. It also has a screen refresh rate of 165 Hz, making it ideal for gaming. The television has a screen size of 65 inches and weighs 21.5 kg, with dimensions of 1444 x 847 x 296 mm.Connectivity and ports
The television is equipped with four HDMI 2.1 ports, two USB ports, composite video input, Ethernet, mini-jack, optical S/PDIF, and subwoofer ports. It also includes a Tandem WOLED Meta 4.0 panel and a 10th generation P5 AI Dual Engine processor, along with Ambilight on four sides.Operating system and user experience
The television runs on Titan OS, a proprietary operating system developed by Philips. This system includes features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, and Google Assistant. However, Titan OS has been criticized for being immature, with slow performance, limited app support, and a lack of search functionality.Display quality and calibration
The OLED951 has been calibrated by Raphaël, a certified PVA calibrator, using advanced tools such as a Jeti Specbos 2501-HiRes spectroradiometer and the CalMAN Ultimate software. The screen has excellent brightness, with peak brightness of 2670 cd/m² on a 10% window and 2700 cd/m² on a 2% window.Comparison with competitors
While the OLED951 has excellent HDR color accuracy and covers 99.7% of the DCI-P3 color space, its reflectance of 17% is higher than that of some competitors, such as the Sony Bravia 9 II and Samsung S99H. It also has a higher power consumption, averaging 99.2 W.Additional features and drawbacks
The television includes Ambilight on four sides, an exclusive Philips feature that enhances the viewing experience with ambient lighting. It also allows for the synchronization of compatible connected bulbs and lamps, with up to six bulbs connectable in the future. However, the metal feet may hinder the installation of a soundbar on shallow cabinets.
