Snapchat is rolling out a new feature called "Snapchat Plans," aimed at helping users organize and manage real-world events directly through the app. This feature allows users to create events, send invitations, and track important details like time, location, and who is attending. Users can invite up to 200 friends, and these invitations are sent through one-to-one chats. Invited guests can respond with options such as "Going," "Maybe," or "Can't Go." A new "My Plans" tab on user profiles lets individuals keep track of both upcoming and past events. When an event is created, Snapchat sends invitations directly in a one-on-one chat with each person invited, and guests can view the full guest list and update their RSVP status at any time. Hosts can also update event details or add more people after the event is created, and guests receive a reminder one hour before the event begins. The feature includes unique Snapchat elements, such as Bitmoji-themed cover art, which allows users to personalize their events with animated avatars. According to a report, more than a third of Snapchat's core users are already using group chats to plan get-togethers, suggesting the demand for such a feature already exists. However, "Snapchat Plans" currently does not include the ability to add specific location details, even though the app has a widely-used map feature called Snap Map. A spokesperson told Engadget that the company is "actively working on" adding location information to the feature, though it is unclear if they will integrate the Snap Map in the process. Snapchat says the new feature can be used to organize a variety of events, from birthday parties and sports games to study sessions and casual weekend hangouts. The company is positioning "Snapchat Plans" as a way to compete with event-planning platforms like Partiful, which are increasingly popular among young users who prefer dedicated apps for organizing meetups over traditional group chats or social media. This follows the launch of Apple's "Invites" app last year, which allows users to create custom invitations for any occasion. Over the past decade, Snapchat has been a major force in the social media space. Now, the company is expanding its focus beyond online communication to help shape how people connect in person. This shift aligns with a broader trend as Generation Z seeks more in-person interactions. However, Snapchat is currently facing challenges, with reports indicating declining usage in the United States and the European Union during the first quarter of this year.
