In 2022, Samsung was the clear leader in the MiniLED television market, controlling 76 percent of global shipments of LCD MiniLED TVs, according to data from Omdia, a market research firm. At that time, TCL and Hisense held much smaller shares—12 percent and 2 percent, respectively. However, by 2024, both TCL and Hisense had overtaken Samsung in this segment, and by 2025, they had widened their lead. This change signals a larger shift in the global television market, where Chinese manufacturers are increasingly taking the lead over traditional Western competitors like Samsung. The QLED Alliance, established in 2017 by Samsung, TCL, and Hisense, was formed to promote quantum dot LCD televisions as an alternative to OLED technology. However, the alliance’s members have since pursued different strategies. Hisense has shifted its focus toward RGB MiniLED technology, while TCL continues to use MiniLED in combination with quantum dot technologies. Samsung, on the other hand, has been gradually moving away from LCD-based products, increasing its investment in OLED technology and reorganizing its LCD lineup. In 2026, Samsung introduced a new line of "MiniLED" televisions that are more affordable than its previous Neo QLED models. These new models use white MiniLEDs instead of the more expensive blue MiniLEDs and eliminate the quantum dot layer, which helps reduce production costs. Samsung is considering replacing some of its consumer QLED products with this new range. However, TCL has raised objections, arguing that televisions without quantum dots and without true local dimming should not be labeled as MiniLED products. TCL and Hisense have also made significant technological advancements, increasing the number of local dimming zones on their most advanced models and expanding their range of MiniLED TVs. As a result, the television market has changed dramatically since 2022.
