A Metropolitan Police officer has been dismissed from the force following allegations of inappropriate behavior. Acting Sergeant Rachel Bright was suspended in 2023 after being charged with a single count of sexual assault. She faced a trial in 2024 for allegedly touching a woman without her consent at a bar in Clapham, south London, in December 2022. Although she was found not guilty of the sexual assault charge by a jury at Kingston Crown Court, the Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards continued to investigate her conduct internally. The disciplinary panel, which reviewed the case, concluded that Bright had committed gross misconduct. The hearing was told that she had repeatedly engaged in inappropriate behavior toward a woman she knew, involving deliberate and unsolicited physical contact. These actions were deemed to breach professional standards, specifically in relation to discreditable conduct. The panel found the allegations against her to be proven, despite her acquittal in the criminal trial. Chief Superintendent Dan Knowles, who oversaw the case, praised the woman who reported Acting Sgt Bright for her courage throughout the process. He stated that her actions were "wholly unacceptable" and did not meet the standards expected of a police officer. The decision to dismiss Bright follows a thorough internal investigation and reflects the Metropolitan Police's commitment to maintaining high ethical standards among its officers. As a result of the disciplinary action, Bright will be placed on the official College of Policing Barred List. This list prevents individuals from holding any future positions within the police service. The move ensures that she cannot re-enter the police force in any capacity, reinforcing the seriousness of the misconduct found against her.
