Driver caught speeding on A7 highway

On an October evening in 2026, a 25-year-old driver was caught speeding at 181 km/h on the A7 highway near Pont-de-l’Isère in the Drôme. By swapping places with her passenger while the car was still moving, she found herself facing a legal consequence far more severe than she had imagined.

Gendarmes conduct speed check

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, gendarmes from the Valence motorized unit conducted a speed check north of Pont-de-l’Isère on the heavily traveled A7 highway. When their radar detected a speed of 181 km/h instead of the allowed 130 km/h, they immediately gave chase.

Speeding violation exceeds limit

It was around 9 p.m. when the car appeared in the field of view of the rapid intervention team from the Valence motorized unit. At 181 km/h on a section limited to 130 km/h, the difference exceeded 50 km/h. This is considered a major speeding violation, a type of check that is far from trivial on the highway.

Driver refuses to stop

The gendarmes ordered the driver to stop, but she continued driving and headed toward a nearby rest area instead of pulling over immediately. Once on the rest area, the car did not stop immediately.

Seat swapping and evidence discarded

The 25-year-old woman and her passenger then decided to swap places while the vehicle was still moving, a high-risk maneuver on an area where other cars and pedestrians are present. At the same time, the pair used this "break" to discard several items by throwing them out the window, including fireworks according to other elements of the investigation.

Driver faces multiple charges

Formally identified as the person driving at the time of the 181 km/h speed check, the driver was already under a suspended license. She was therefore driving in a situation of driving with a suspended license, a criminal offense that adds to the major speeding violation and the refusal to comply with the gendarmes' orders.

Passenger tests positive for substances

Her 20-year-old passenger tested positive for alcohol and narcotics, indicating that the evening also potentially involved driving under the influence of alcohol and narcotics if the seat swap had functioned. The young man was released from custody but will have to answer for his own violations before the court in February 2027.

Legal context of road violence

This case reached the Valence correctional court in a context where the repression of "road violence" has clearly intensified. Since the July 9, 2025 law creating the offense of "road homicide" and criminalizing "very serious speeding," exceeding the speed limit by at least 50 km/h has become a criminal offense, punishable by up to three months in prison and a fine of 3,750 euros, with a criminal record.

Severe sentencing for multiple offenses

By accumulating a 51 km/h excess on the A7, a suspended license, refusal to comply, and this maneuver of swapping seats while moving, the young woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with revocation of a three-month probation and an immediate deposit order, a sanction that illustrates how far the consequences of a series of decisions made in the span of a few minutes can go today.
