Citizens and officials discuss rural transport

The Region Occitanie has started a consultation involving 35 randomly selected citizens and nine regional elected officials to explore transportation challenges in rural areas. The goal is to develop proposals that will influence future regional mobility policies.

Consultation aims to create tailored solutions

The 35 citizens, chosen from the 13 departments of Occitanie, met on October 3 and 4 with officials to address how to improve movement for residents in sparsely populated regions. The consultation is meant to uncover solutions that fit the specific needs of rural communities.

Committee includes diverse participants

Named the Regional Citizens' Dialogue Committee (CRDC), the initiative brings together citizens and representatives from various political groups in the regional assembly. The first meeting involved sharing experiences and forming small working groups to develop proposals.

Meetings will continue in different locations

The consultation is expected to last three months, with meetings planned in Toulouse and Montpellier, as well as visits to other communes. The next session is scheduled for October 7 and 8 in Toulouse, followed by a visit to Lectoure in the Gers department on November 6.

Region responds to public concerns

The initiative follows the Region's La Région à vos côtés operation from last year, where mobility was a major topic. After the consultation, the committee's findings will be presented to all regional elected officials, leading to an action plan within six months.

Initiative builds on past engagement

Region President Carole Delga hopes the CRDC will help shape long-term policies for rural areas. This consultation follows the 2013 General Assembly of Rail and Intermodality, which involved over 15,000 people in shaping regional transport strategy.
