Level-5, a well-known Japanese game studio famous for creating popular series like Professor Layton, Yo-kai Watch, Inazuma Eleven, and Ni no Kuni, is drawing attention for potential use of artificial intelligence in its upcoming projects. The company recently announced a remake of Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village, originally released on Nintendo DS in 2007. This updated version is set to launch in 2027 on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, and PlayStation 5. The remake will feature redesigned 3D characters with high-resolution animations and a wider visual format. The game’s official website has shared images showing the visual upgrades, which have sparked some fan discussions about whether AI tools were used to enhance the environments. In addition to the Professor Layton remake, Level-5 has also announced a new, unreleased episode titled Professor Layton and the New Steam World, scheduled for December 10, 2026, and previewed during a Nintendo Direct event in September. Another upcoming title, Yo-kai Watch and DecaPolice, is expected to release soon as well. While Level-5 has not officially confirmed whether AI was used in the Professor Layton remake, the studio has previously admitted to using AI tools in the development and marketing of its games. In 2023, they mentioned using Stable Diffusion, an AI program, to create 3D character models. AI was also used to generate some environmental elements in Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road. Akihiro Hino, the head of Level-5 and creator of the Professor Layton series, noted in 2025 that AI is becoming increasingly common in game development. He estimated that 80 to 90 percent of the code in modern games is initially generated by AI and then refined by human programmers. However, Hino stressed that the artistic and aesthetic choices in games remain the responsibility of human developers. AI-generated content is typically adjusted and finalized by humans to ensure it meets the desired quality and style. He also pointed out that the Professor Layton series has always had unique and intentionally stylized environments, which might give the impression of AI-generated visuals but are not necessarily created using AI. Despite the growing role of AI in game development, Hino emphasized that human creativity and artistic direction remain central to the development process. The studio’s use of AI tools reflects broader industry trends, but Level-5 continues to highlight the importance of human oversight in maintaining the quality and distinctiveness of its games. As the Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village remake approaches, fans will be watching closely to see how AI might shape the future of game development while preserving the creative vision of the studio.
