Domhnall Gleeson, an Irish actor known for roles in films like About Time and Ex Machina, recently shared that he felt "embarrassed" by fellow Irish actor Cillian Murphy during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. The pair were guests on the popular BBC chat show in October 2023, along with singer Taylor Swift. During that episode, Murphy praised Gleeson for his performance in a Martin McDonagh play called The Lieutenant of Inishmore, calling it "magnetic." Gleeson said he was taken aback not by Swift, but by Murphy’s heartfelt compliment. In a recent interview with Metro, Gleeson reflected on the moment, saying that he felt touched but also embarrassed by Murphy’s praise. "I don't know if it's an Irish people thing, but we're not very good at handling a compliment and definitely get a little bit embarrassed," he explained. He added that Murphy is one of his acting heroes, and the compliment meant a lot to him, even though it made him feel shy. "I definitely got a bit shy, which is weird when you're being filmed, but it made me feel good but also embarrassed at the same time." The episode on The Graham Norton Show had an unexpected follow-up. After the broadcast, Swift invited everyone present—Gleeson, Murphy, Norton, and others—to appear in her music video for the song "Opalite." The idea came to Swift during a promotional tour for her album The Life of a Showgirl. She recalled that Gleeson had made a light-hearted joke about wanting to be in one of her videos, which inspired her to create the project. The video, which featured a mix of celebrities and show guests, became a fun and quirky collaboration. Both Gleeson and Murphy have enjoyed successful careers in Hollywood. Murphy won an Academy Award in 2024 for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and has starred in films such as Inception and 28 Days Later. Gleeson, on the other hand, is currently starring in The Paper, a spin-off of the U.S. version of The Office. Meanwhile, Norton was invited to Swift’s high-profile wedding at Madison Square Garden in July, though it is unclear if Gleeson and Murphy received similar invitations.
