Africa's digital growth faces rising cyber threats, with uneven cybersecurity readiness across the continent, according to recent reports.
Africa's digital growth faces cybersecurity challenges
Africa is experiencing rapid digital transformation, but this progress is accompanied by rising cybersecurity risks. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) emphasizes that robust cybersecurity is vital to fully benefit from this development. Recent discoveries of critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language, highlight the need for vigilance in detecting and responding to cyber threats.Role of cybersecurity response teams
Cybersecurity threats can be mitigated through early detection and coordinated responses. This is where Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) or Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRT) play a crucial role. These teams monitor security alerts, analyze vulnerabilities, and advise affected organizations on how to protect their systems. They may recommend actions such as applying security updates, checking for system compromises, or isolating affected systems to prevent the spread of an attack.Progress in Africa's cybersecurity infrastructure
Efforts to establish national cybersecurity response mechanisms in Africa are ongoing, but progress varies. According to the ITU's 2025 report, 24 African countries have set up national incident response teams. However, the World Bank notes that only a minority of these teams are fully operational. In 2024, just five of 22 countries in West and Central Africa and 10 of 26 in East and Southern Africa had at least one functioning CSIRT.Challenges in staffing and coordination
Despite the creation of these teams, many African countries struggle with insufficient resources, skills, and funding. The ITU’s 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index highlights these deficiencies. Additionally, INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report points to coordination issues, with most African countries wanting to improve cooperation with the private sector and international partners to better address cyber threats.
