Painting joins Boston museum collection

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has acquired Arc en ciel n°5, a painting created in 1913 by Robert Delaunay, a key figure in the Cubist and Orphist movements. The artwork is now part of the museum’s permanent collection, adding to its holdings of modern European art.

Artwork sold at New York auction

Arc en ciel n°5 was part of the Arnold and Joan Saltzman collection, a group of about 70 European modern artworks sold by Christie's New York during its autumn sales in 2025. The auction marked the dispersal of this significant private collection.

London gallery presented the painting

The painting was presented by the London gallery Willoughby Gerrish during the most recent edition of the Tefaf, an international art fair held annually in Maastricht, Netherlands. This presentation likely increased its visibility among collectors and institutions.

Long history with American collectors

Arc en ciel n°5 had been in the possession of American collectors for fifty-five years before being sold at auction. It was originally acquired from Sotheby's in London on December 2, 1970, for 317,500 dollars, marking the beginning of its extended stay in the United States.
