Rivian turns SUVs into interactive Ghostbusters scenes for Halloween, blending pop culture with tech for a spooky drive.
Rivian introduces Halloween-themed mode
From October 9 to November 2, 2026, Rivian will offer a special "Ghostbusters" mode that turns its SUVs into interactive Halloween-themed vehicles. The feature allows drivers to transform their cars with themed sounds, lights, and visual effects, creating a spooky atmosphere for the season.Software update enables the feature
A software update began on October 10 to enable the Ghostbusters mode on compatible Rivian vehicles. The update includes version 2026.36.0 for the Rivian R1 and 2026.36.40 for the R2. The Rivian smartphone app must also be updated to access the new themed commands and features.Partnership with Sony Pictures
Rivian has partnered with Sony Pictures for the Ghostbusters license, creating a real advertising campaign. Bill Murray, who starred in the original Ghostbusters films, appears in promotional materials. This is not the first time Rivian has engaged with pop culture, having previously referenced the Knight Rider series with David Hasselhoff.Limited physical and software features
For this 2026 edition, Rivian combines physical styling with onboard software and animations on charging stations. A special "Ecto-R1" version of the R1S SUV features 22-inch wheels, white rims, red trim, and accessories inspired by the Ecto-1 from the movies. However, these physical examples are reserved for tours and promotions, not for sale to the public.Interactive lighting and sound effects
The Ghostbusters mode includes unique lighting and sound effects. The door locking system plays the Ecto-1 sound effect on the first R1s, while newer models and the R2 add options like Proton Pack and Chant for varied ambiance. Six light signatures on the car display names like Ecto-1, Slimer, and Peter Venkman, each with different LED patterns for a recognizable effect at night.In-cabin game and customization
Inside the vehicle, the large central screen transforms into a game room with Mallow Mash, a mini-game featuring characters from the Ghostbusters universe. A hidden object hunt is also included in the app menus, with clues and surprises scattered throughout. Most of these features are available when the vehicle is stopped, though some visual customizations remain accessible while driving, extending the thematic experience into daily life.
