For Halloween 2026, electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has partnered with Sony Pictures to introduce a temporary Ghostbusters-themed experience for its electric SUVs, including the R1S, R1T, and R2 models. This special feature, called Halloween Mode, is delivered through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, transforming the vehicles into ghost-hunting tools inspired by the classic Ghostbusters franchise. The Halloween Mode includes a redesigned digital interface, hidden games, and a light show inspired by the Ecto-1, the iconic vehicle from the original Ghostbusters film. The update is available to all Rivian vehicles through a remote software update, and it is active from October 9 to November 2, 2026. Specific software versions are used for different models: the R1S switches to version 2026.36.0, and the R2 to 2026.36.40. Once the update is complete, a dedicated message appears on the driver’s screen, inviting them to launch the integrated Ghostbusters application. The driving interface then changes to a special presentation featuring lights, graphics, and themed sounds. Rear passengers also get a special experience with a Trick or Treat Mode that controls the front and rear screens, all within the Ghostbusters universe. When Halloween Mode is activated, Rivian's vehicles display colors and animations inspired by the films, with locking sounds replaced by Ghostbusters sound effects. Outside the vehicle, personalized LED sequences can be triggered with several themes to choose from, such as "Ecto-1," "Proton Pack," "Slimer," "Ghost Trap," or "Peter Venkman," plus a random mode. These light and sound displays can even be linked to movement detection around the car, adding an interactive element to the experience. Rivian has also added a playful dimension with a game called Mallow Mash, which appears on the central screen when the vehicle is stopped. Players must pop Mini-Pufts, small animated marshmallows from the Ghostbusters saga, against the clock. A digital treasure hunt also sends occupants searching through the infotainment menus for hidden characters. Additionally, Rivian has created a special R1S model called the Ecto-R1, featuring 22-inch aero wheels finished in chrome, red trim, "No-Ghost" logos on the hood and doors, and a custom-mounted cargo rack with sirens, spotlights, radar, and side tanks. This SUV will tour Rivian spaces in cities like Laguna Beach, Austin, Venice, Miami, San Francisco, and New York, animating events dedicated to this special Halloween operation.
