Solen Athanassopoulos's KnowNess is a performance that explores themes of memory and identity through a unique blend of collaborative research, hip-hop freestyle, and storytelling. The show features letters written to ancestors, which inspire a form of movement that blends personal and collective memories with imagination. On stage, these elements come together in a dynamic dance that balances between spontaneous improvisation and structured composition. The performers use their own voices and those of past generations, supported by live music, to create a space where legacies are shared, reinterpreted, and passed on. The performance was choreographed by Solen Athanassopoulos and includes dancers Amel Derouin Brahimi, Yanice Djae, Natty Oréa, and Solen Athanassopoulos herself. Additional contributions came from Fabrice Taraud and Pika, who provided external perspectives and helped with the choreography. The music was composed by PLDG Pour l'Amour du Groove – AL20 & Mystraw, with Mystraw also performing live. The stage was designed with lighting by Virgile Amour and general stage management by the same individual. Costumes were created by Coragalb and Dounia Abbaz, while the set design was done by Sandrine Dupé. KnowNess was presented at The Villette, a cultural venue in Paris, from November 18 to 21, 2026. The event took place in a space known for hosting innovative and experimental performances, making it an appropriate setting for a work that challenges traditional notions of identity and memory. The performance invited audiences to reflect on how personal and collective histories shape who we are and how we connect with those who came before us. The blend of dance, music, and spoken word in KnowNess creates an immersive experience that encourages both personal reflection and communal engagement. By weaving together past and present, the performance highlights the ongoing dialogue between generations and the ways in which identity is not fixed but continuously shaped through shared experiences and cultural expression.
