CEE Animation launches YARS, a new system to help creators craft age-sensitive animated content by aligning storytelling with children's developmental stages.
CEE Animation launches new rating system
CEE Animation has introduced the Young Audience Rating System (YARS), a new framework aimed at helping animation professionals better understand the needs and expectations of children and adolescents. This system is designed to provide more nuanced guidance for creating and distributing animated content tailored to different stages of development.System combines psychology with creative practice
YARS integrates developmental psychology with practical advice for the creation, distribution, and presentation of animated films. It was developed within Animation HUB and operates under the CEE Animation umbrella. The initiative seeks to move beyond the common practice of treating children's animation as a single category.Focus on distinct developmental stages
The system addresses the issue of viewing children's animation as a monolithic category by emphasizing the differences between various stages of childhood and adolescence. YARS examines how young viewers perceive and respond to animated content based on their emotional, cognitive, and social development.Collaboration with media psychologist
YARS was developed in collaboration with media psychologist Martina Peštaj, who highlights the importance of aligning content with the developmental characteristics of each age group. The system covers a wide range of ages, from toddlers to late adolescents, and explores how these characteristics relate to key creative elements in animated films.Framework for creative decisions
Unlike traditional age-rating systems, which focus on content appropriateness, YARS offers a framework to help professionals understand how creative choices may resonate with viewers at different developmental stages. It encourages filmmakers to consider how themes, characters, and storytelling can connect with young audiences.Resources for industry professionals
The initiative provides a range of resources for professionals in the animation industry, including a "Practical Guide for Young Animation Audiences" and downloadable age-rating labels. Additional materials, such as an interview with Peštaj and a webinar, are available on the Animation HUB website.Support from European funding bodies
Animation HUB, which hosts YARS, is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA and co-financed by the governments of Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia through the International Visegrad Fund. Additional funding comes from the Czech Audiovisual Fund and other national and regional partners.
