AI use widespread among adults

In the United States, 70 percent of adults have already used artificial intelligence, with half of them confiding in it about personal matters such as relationships or mental health. This trend highlights the growing role of AI in everyday life and personal decision-making.

Trust in AI surpasses trust in close relationships

According to a report by the American Psychological Association published in October 2026, one in ten users trusts AI more than their close friends or family. This finding suggests a shift in how people perceive and rely on technology for emotional support.

Stress levels remain high despite AI integration

A large-scale survey on stress and AI advice conducted by the Harris Poll firm from July 29 to August 24, 2026, found that 3,132 Americans aged 18 and older reported higher than normal levels of tension. The Stress in America 2026 report identified the cost of living as the primary stress factor, cited by 77 percent of respondents.

Daily life impacted by ongoing stress

Nearly 28 percent of adults feel they have little control over their future, and the tension disrupts sleep for many. Additionally, 72 percent believe pressure is now a regular part of their daily lives, with bad news no longer surprising a majority of them.

AI used for both practical and emotional support

The majority of users have turned to AI for daily decisions or to organize their thoughts. Intimate use extends further, with 47 percent consulting AI as a therapist. Some seek a second opinion after a therapy session, showing the increasing reliance on AI for emotional guidance.

AI therapy use varies by age group

The therapeutic use of AI differs significantly by age. Among those aged 18-29, 26 percent consult AI as a therapist, while the proportion drops to 3 percent among those over 62 years old. Around 22 percent of users engage in casual conversation with AI, indicating varied levels of interaction and trust.
