Ubisoft has announced Rayman Legends Retold, a remake of its 2013 platformer Rayman Legends. This version introduces new levels, enhanced visuals, and expanded storytelling with full voice acting. The project aims to modernize the game while preserving the gameplay that made the original a critical success. As part of a larger plan to revitalize the Rayman franchise, the remake serves as a foundation for future development.
According to brand producer Loïc Gounon, the decision to remake Rayman Legends was part of a broader strategy to "restart the franchise." The team aimed to rebuild its structure and adopt new technology, which led them to consider a remake as a way to reacquaint new developers with the Rayman universe. Gounon explained that remakes often help teams gain experience with established intellectual properties, using examples like Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread as similar cases.
The most notable change in Rayman Legends Retold is the shift from a hand-painted 2D style to a fully 3D visual design, while keeping the side-on perspective that defined the original. Gounon stated that this change reflects the franchise’s future direction, focusing on the adventurous spirit of Rayman and leveraging 3D capabilities. The team used the original UbiArt Framework engine for core gameplay and level design, while Ubisoft’s newer Snowdrop engine handles the new visuals, character models, and environments.
Gounon acknowledged that some fans might be attached to the original hand-drawn look, but he believes the 3D upgrade will be worth it when players experience the new features like voice acting and fully animated cutscenes. He emphasized that this is not just a simple remake but a new game that retains the elements that made the original successful.
The remake has faced delays and is now set to release on December 3, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC. Gounon expressed confidence in the Rayman franchise’s future, noting that the shift to 3D allows the team to create a library of 3D assets that can be used for future projects.
