Mercedes-AMG unveils its first fully electric SUV, the GT, with up to 1,169 horsepower, competing directly with the new Porsche Cayenne Electric.
Mercedes unveils new electric SUV
The World Auto Show concluded its final weekend at Porte de Versailles when the sporting division of Mercedes presented its new electric SUV named "GT" on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The presentation took place at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, during a party organized to celebrate the brand's 140th anniversary.AMG's first large electric SUV
According to a statement from Mercedes-AMG, this is the first large SUV fully developed by AMG in 59 years of history. It announces a power output of up to 1,169 horsepower and a charging capacity of up to 710 kW. The designated competitor is the new Porsche Cayenne Electric, which in its most powerful Turbo version claims 1,156 horsepower.Technology from AMG GT Coupé
The new AMG GT SUV reuses the technology of the AMG GT Coupé 4 Doors electric sedan, unveiled in May with its fake V8 sound. It uses the same AMG.EA platform, and on the GT 55 and GT 63, the same axial flow motors.Sound and performance features
It also simulates the sound of a V8 or a six-cylinder (depending on the version), with fake gear shifts. At the top of the range, the AMG GT 63 SUV announces 1,169 horsepower and 2,000 Nm of torque. The Cayenne Turbo Electric reaches 1,156 horsepower and 1,500 Nm.Acceleration claims and testing
The 13 horsepower difference is not significant. However, Mercedes claims 500 Nm more torque. Be careful when reading the technical specifications, as Mercedes claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds measured with a "1-foot rollout." Measuring in this way, the stopwatch starts only after the first 30.48 centimeters (a foot), which are the slowest part of the standing start.Acceleration times compared
Without this trick, the GT 63 takes 2.7 seconds, whereas Porsche claims 2.5 seconds for the Cayenne Turbo. One step lower, the GT 53 SUV and the Cayenne S Electric both have 544 horsepower. However, the Porsche SUV reaches 666 horsepower with the Launch Control and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, compared to 4.2 seconds for the Mercedes.Weight and size details
These times concern SUVs weighing more than 2.5 tons. Mercedes announces 2,525 kg for the GT 53 and up to 2,715 kg for the GT 55 equipped with the large battery, for a length of 5.08 meters.Battery technology and capacity
Regarding the battery, Mercedes offers 106 or 128 kWh usable, with an 800-volt architecture. Its cylindrical cells are directly immersed in an oil that does not conduct electricity, so that the power remains stable even when it is used for a long time.Charging capabilities
Porsche announces 113 kWh for its Cayenne electric, but in gross capacity: approximately 108 kWh are actually usable, which is between the two batteries of Mercedes. On paper, the charging time favors AMG: up to 600 kW peak with the small battery, 710 kW with the large one, and 10 to 80% in 11 or 12 minutes.Charging time comparison
The Cayenne tops out at 400 kW under very specific conditions (390 kW under the optimal conditions retained by Porsche) and takes less than 16 minutes to go from 10 to 80%. Advantage Mercedes? The AMG figures assume a charging station capable of following. Mercedes itself specifies that on a 400 kW charging station, the 10 to 80% charge takes 14 minutes with the 106 kWh battery and 16 minutes with the 128 kWh battery. Therefore, it is approximately the same time as the Cayenne.Range capabilities
Regarding range, the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 SUV announces 597 to 668 km WLTP, while the GT 55 and GT 63 promise between 620 and 700 km. On the other side, the Cayenne S Electric reaches 653 km, the Cayenne Turbo Electric 622 km, and the Cayenne S Coupé Electric, which is more aerodynamic, 669 km.Range comparison
On paper, Mercedes announces the most generous range, but only with the 128 kWh battery. With the 106 kWh battery, the GT 55 and GT 63 drop to 525-585 km, below the Cayenne Turbo Electric.Availability and pricing
Mercedes offers its SUV in three versions. The GT 53 SUV (544 horsepower, two conventional motors) will be available for order this Tuesday, October 20, starting at 113,050 euros (German price). The GT 55 SUV (816 horsepower) and GT 63 SUV (1,169 horsepower), which have three motors, will only arrive in spring 2027, and their prices are not yet known.Porsche's market lead
Porsche therefore has eleven months of advantage. The manufacturer opened orders for the Cayenne Electric in November 2025. In France, the SUV range includes three versions: the Cayenne Electric (408 horsepower, 107,600 euros), the Cayenne S Electric (544 horsepower, 129,200 euros) and the Cayenne Turbo Electric (1,156 horsepower, 167,200 euros).
