Airbnb updates house rules to stop hosts from asking guests to do chores, effective November 20.
Airbnb updates house rules
Airbnb has announced updates to its house rules that will take effect for all bookings made from November 20. The changes aim to prevent property owners from requiring guests to perform certain household tasks, such as making the bed or washing dishes.Restrictions on household tasks
Under the new policy, hosts will no longer be allowed to ask guests to perform tasks that would typically be handled by a cleaning staff. This includes making beds, taking out trash, or washing and putting away dishes. The change follows complaints from users who felt they were paying cleaning fees only to still be required to do these tasks before leaving.New rules on access and penalties
The updated rules also prohibit hosts from restricting access to items listed in the listing, such as air conditioning, or imposing penalties. Hosts will no longer be able to communicate new rules after the booking has been made. These changes apply globally, though some exceptions may be allowed depending on the situation.Exceptions for specific requests
Airbnb allows for exceptions in certain circumstances, such as asking guests to limit their shower time due to local water shortages or to dispose of trash in bear-proof bins in areas where bears are present. Each request must be approved by the platform and is considered only under specific conditions.Seven living rules for hosts
Hosts will now be able to define up to seven living rules for their accommodations, which must be presented to guests at the time of booking. These rules can include limits on the number of people staying, quiet hours, whether events or photo shoots are allowed, pet policies, smoking or vaping rules, and whether guests can leave keys behind upon departure.
