In 2022, Decathlon, a well-known French retailer, entered the electric cargo bike market with the Btwin R500E, a low-cost model that quickly gained popularity among families. By 2026, the company updated this longtail model—designed to carry two children in the rear—with some improvements, naming it the Btwin E-Three 500. However, this update is expected to be short-lived, as a new range of electric cargo bikes is reportedly in development. Decathlon has been testing these new models through a product development program, targeting specific customer groups. The new range is expected to include three models: the E-Three 100, E-Three 500, and E-Two 500. The E-Three 100 is an entry-level longtail model, designed for two children, with an estimated price of around 2,000 euros. It is a more affordable version of the E-Three 500, which is a mid-range longtail for two children, priced at 2,500 euros. The E-Two 500 is a mid-range midtail, intended for two adults, with an estimated price of 2,200 euros. The E-Three 500 is a successor to the current Btwin E-Three model and retains the longtail format for carrying two children. It features a smaller front wheel (20 inches) with large tires, similar to a fatbike, and an open frame for easier access. It also includes an external battery and a reduced weight, while maintaining features like the front lock, footrests, and side skirts. The E-Two 500 shares the 20-inch wheel and two-tone tires with the E-Three 500, but it has a new reinforced rear frame to handle heavier loads. This midtail model is designed for two adults, featuring a rear seat with handles, typical of fatbike-style cargo bikes. It is expected to compete with similar models like the Nakamura Crosscity+ at around 2,200 euros. While the E-Three 500 and E-Two 500 are currently in the spotlight, the high-end Owuru "900" models have not yet been officially announced. Decathlon may still revise these models or adjust its strategy based on market feedback. For two years, rumors have suggested that Decathlon is developing more premium electric cargo bikes. Earlier product plans included a midtail starting at 2,500 euros and a longtail at 3,200 euros. In 2025, the Btwin E-Two 900 and E-Three 900 were uncovered, featuring advanced central motor systems with automatic transmissions. However, the company has reportedly shifted its focus to more affordable models, possibly due to the competitive landscape. Meanwhile, Intersport, a competitor, has kept its models more budget-friendly, with the Nakamura Crosscity starting at under 1,100 euros. Asian manufacturers have also increased their presence in this growing market. Decathlon’s upcoming official announcements will clarify whether the E-Three 500, E-Three 100, and E-Two 500, along with the potential "900" models, will be released as planned.
