A postal worker has been jailed for diverting drug parcels from Royal Mail and selling cannabis. Amjad Ali, 50, from Olivia Drive in Slough, was found guilty of several charges, including being involved in the supply of class B drugs, theft of parcels, possession of criminal property, and having an offensive weapon in a private place. At Reading Crown Court, he received a sentence of six years and nine months.
Ali worked at a Royal Mail site near the border with London and Heathrow. He diverted packages he believed contained cannabis before they were scanned, then relabelled them for delivery to other addresses, including his own. These activities occurred multiple times between 2024 and 2025 before he was caught.
In December of last year, police raided Ali's home, car, and a storage facility. They discovered a large amount of cash, totaling £1,185,420, in his storage locker, and an additional £42,290 in his home. According to Thames Valley Police, this money is believed to have come from the sale of the cannabis. PC Filippo Brancato, the investigating officer, noted that this was the largest cash seizure by the force under the Proceeds of Crime Act, with the money to be reinvested into policing and community programs.
Royal Mail emphasized that the safety and security of the mail is their top priority and that they take any criminal activity involving their network seriously. The company stated they have various measures in place to protect the mail and collaborate closely with law enforcement to support criminal investigations.
Ali's case comes shortly after the UK Border Force made its largest-ever cannabis seizure in May. At Southampton Port, 12 tonnes of cannabis, valued at an estimated £139 million, were intercepted. The drug was hidden inside cardboard boxes in two shipping containers from Canada.
