Apple recently introduced a new feature called Siri Recap for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, designed to help users take notes during meetings or conversations. The feature uses ambient listening to automatically generate a title, summary, and key points from spoken discussions. Users can choose to keep the feature active at all times, set it to activate at specific times, or disable it completely.
Alongside Siri Recap, Apple announced several other audio-related features for the Apple Watch. These include Shazam for instant song identification, which works similarly to Google’s Now Playing feature. The watch can also detect loud sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying and alert the user. Additionally, a feature called Live Rewind allows users to replay the last 15 seconds of a conversation by double-pressing the digital crown.
Apple emphasized that none of these features store audio recordings or make raw audio data accessible. Siri Recap does not identify individuals speaking, and Live Rewind recaps are encrypted end-to-end. However, the fact that the watch is always listening, even when not actively recording, has raised some privacy concerns. Critics worry that it might accidentally capture sensitive or private information in the summaries it generates.
Siri Recap is not the first of its kind on the Apple Watch. Similar meeting notetaking tools like Granola and Circleback already offer comparable features and have Apple Watch apps. Apple’s new feature, however, integrates more closely with the watch’s built-in assistant, Siri, and adds more automation and convenience for users.
