Choreographer explores dance and society

Bouziane Bouteldja, a choreographer researching the links between dance and societal issues, has developed a choreographic project titled Des danses & des luttes that explores the history of dances associated with social and political struggles worldwide and those born from encounters between peoples. The project includes dances such as flamenco, pantsula, passant, voguing, and breakdance, tracing their roots and collective memory.

Origins of included dances

Flamenco, according to the project, has roots in Indian and Arab-Berber dances before mixing with Andalusian influences. Pantsula comes from South Africa, while other dances such as hip-hop, Celtic dances, and krump are also included. The project aims to revive the history of these dances in a living manner, showing how each movement embodies collective memory.

Interactive and educational approach

Bouziane Bouteldja invites the audience to try these steps, while offering insights to better understand and fight against discrimination related to ethnic, religious, or gender identities. The choreography, text, and staging are by Bouziane Bouteldja, with staging by Jérémie Le Louët. The choreographic assistant is Mathilde Rispal, working with Bouziane Bouteldja, Mathilde Rispal, Fakri Allaoui, and amateur dancers.
