SNCF unions call for strike

The SNCF unions have called for a strike on November 5, with several major union groups joining the effort. The CGT Cheminots, UNSA Ferroviaire, SUD-Rail, and CFDT Cheminots have all launched a mobilization campaign for SNCF employees, aiming to address concerns about wages and working conditions.

Strike planning and demands

In a joint statement, the unions are calling on railway workers to gather on November 3 in Saint-Denis to defend their purchasing power, followed by a unified strike on November 5. The strike is aimed at securing better wages, job security, and improved social and working conditions for employees.

Unions highlight economic pressures

The trade union organizations have condemned austerity policies that they say are worsening the living conditions of employees. They specifically point to rising energy prices, essential food products, and fuel costs as major concerns affecting workers' livelihoods.

Union demands and SNCF’s finances

The unions are demanding a general increase in wages, a revaluation of work bonuses and the residence allowance, and the creation of a third month of bonus. These demands are supported by SNCF’s record semi-annual net profit of 1.2 billion euros, announced in July.

Concerns about job cuts and safety

Beyond wage issues, the unions are criticizing job cuts, a lack of staff, and budget restrictions, which they argue harm working conditions and railway safety. These concerns are part of the broader push for better treatment of employees within the organization.

Strike timing and new TGV launch

The planned strike on November 5 falls the day before the launch of the new TGV M. The SNCF announced the service and a press presentation of the new trains on November 6 between Paris and Marseille, with travelers able to board as early as November 9, 2026.

New TGV features and schedule

This new generation TGV will initially provide a daily round trip between Paris and Marseille, using double carriages that offer 1,240 seats. The train represents a significant upgrade in speed and comfort for passengers traveling between the two cities.
