Marks & Spencer (M&S) Food is introducing "surprise bags" in collaboration with the app Too Good To Go, offering customers the chance to buy surplus bakery items like cookies, bread, and pastries. These bags will be available through the Too Good To Go app, with a limited number released each day. Each bag costs £3.80 and includes three to four bakery products, valued at least £10.20. They can be collected from over 350 M&S Food stores one hour before closing on weekdays and Saturdays. The specific items inside each bag will vary daily based on available stock, and customers cannot choose particular products. The initiative is part of M&S Food's broader effort to reduce food waste, with a goal of halving food waste by 2030. Chelsea Kerr, managing director at Too Good To Go UK & Ireland, highlighted that the partnership shows how businesses and consumers can work together to tackle food waste. Lucinda Langton, head of sustainability at M&S Food, noted that this collaboration is a tangible step toward achieving the company's environmental goals. In addition to the surprise bags, M&S Food has been working with Neighbourly, a platform that connects businesses with local charities, to redistribute surplus food. So far, this effort has led to the donation of more than 130 meals. This initiative follows recent updates to M&S's in-store bakeries, including the introduction of new items such as sausage rolls priced at £2.25 each. These rolls are made with RSPCA-assured outdoor-bred British pork and all-butter puff pastry. Other new bakery items include bread sticks and a variety of pastries.
